A woman should
have
one old love
she can imagine going back to,
and one who reminds her how far she has come.
A woman should
have
enough money
within her control to
move out and rent a place of her own
A woman should
have
something
perfect to wear if the employer
or date of her dreams wants to
see her in an
hour
A woman should
have
a youth she is
content to leave behind.
A woman should
have
a past juicy
enough that she’s looking
forward to retelling it in her old age.
A woman should
have
a set of
screwdrivers,
a cordless drill and a black lace bra.
A woman should
have
one friend who
always makes her laugh
and one who lets her cry.
A woman should
have
a good piece
of furniture not previoulsy owned
by anyone else in her family.
A woman should
have eight matching plates,
wine glasses with stems
and a recipe for a meal
that will make her guests feel honoured.
A woman should
have
a feeling of
control over her destiny.
Every woman
should know
how to fall in
love without losing herself.
Every woman
should know
how to quit a
job,
break up with
a lover,
and comfort a
friend
without ruining the friendship.
Every woman
woman should know
when to try
harder….
and when to walk away.
Every woman
should know
that she can’t
change the length of her calves,
the width of her hips or the nature of her
parents.
Every woman
should know
that her
childhood may not have been perfect……
but it’s over.
Every woman
should know
what she would
and wouldn’t do for love.
Every woman
should know
how to live
alone……even if she doesn’t like it.
Every woman
should know
whom she can
trust, whom she can’t,
and why she
shouldn’t take it personally.
Every woman
should know
where to
go
be it to her
best friends kitchen table
or a charming
inn in the woods
when her soul
needs soothing.
Every woman
should know
What she can
and can’t accomplish in a day…..
a month……and a
year.

I don't have a cordless drill or a black bra - I am doomed!
ReplyDeleteHi Tabs. I have the black bra but not the cordless drill. So I can have "pert puppies" with everything else hanging off it's hinges ;-)
DeleteGreat list. I tell my 15 year old daughter to be true to herself, even though it is painful to watch some of her friends and peers heading in the wrong direction.
ReplyDeleteGreat advice Anon, but so difficult to believe when you are a teenager :-(
DeleteI had to pop over today and say hello, I was missing conversing with you. I hope you are enjoying spring so far. This is a fantastic list Vannessa! :) I love everything shared here, Maya Angelou is oh so wise! I was just thinking about clothing today and the importance of having a few go-to outfits for a few specific occasions-casual all the way to more formal. I'd like to add to this list, a few favorite recipes that can be whipped up without a recipe on short notice if friends drop by,etc. It just helps one feel less frazzled and confident that the food will turn out perfect.
ReplyDeleteOf course Karla. You are so right about the recipes. They can be life-savers having a few tried and tested ones up our sleeves. Hope you and Lily are well Sweets xx
DeleteNevermind, it appears the recipe point may have been covered with a recipe that will make guests feel honored. ;)
ReplyDelete@Karla. No it could be just tried and tested recipes that you can fall back on but not necessarily for guests ;-)
ReplyDeleteI think you got it pretty well dear! Great inspiration! xo Caroline
ReplyDeleteI love this list and fully agree to every word, every women should be independent enough to hold her own but not so independent that she feels she doesn't need others. I know that I don't have a few of them on this list, I need to start working on it! I enjoyed reading your views on my last post. Have a Fantastic Friday!
ReplyDeleteGreat list...pretty much covered, I think ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend xx
This is such a fabulous list and one that we need to remind our self of. We are women... beautiful, complex and extraordinary with a dash of quirkiness! ...Wishing you a beautiful and blessed week-end my friend.. xo Celia M. (HHL)
ReplyDeleteHello Vanessa! I attempted to comment on this yesterday but my iPad didn't register the comment. I'm back again. I've read this piece and it definitely resonates with me. As we get older it seems (hopefully) we can tick off more of those boxes. I felt good reading it at the ripe old age of 52. Great advice from Maya Angelou. I also love your images lady! We have such similar taste. I have pinned and posted many of your same favorites and vice versa. That must mean we are on the same wavelength. Wonderful post and thanks for the inspiration.

HI Vanessa, I'm just catching up with your blog and yes, I definitely agree; a woman should have a youth she is content to leave behind, and of course, some juicy stories too. Great list.
