Live and Love Life

While thinking about what to write today (it doesn’t come naturally for me you have to understand), I suddenly noticed a wonderful poem/piece of writing that I have had on my desk which was given to me by one of my first coaches. I have no idea who wrote it, but I think it is a wonderful reminder of how life should be.

Here it is:

"As we grow up, we learn that even the one person
that wasn’t supposed to ever let you down, probably will.

You will have your heart broken probably more than once,
and it’s harder every time.

You’ll break hearts too,
so remember how it felt when yours was broken.

You’ll fight with your best friend.

You’ll blame a new love for things an old one did.

You’ll cry because time is passing too fast,
and you’ll eventually lose someone you love.

So take too many pictures, laugh too much,
and love like you’ve never been hurt,
because every sixty seconds you spend upset
is a minute of happiness you will never get back.

(This is the sentence that really resonates with me the most-see why below)

Don’t be afraid that your life will end,
Be afraid that it will never begin!!!"

You can see the sentence that really speaks out loud to me- I will tell you why (without trying to be too maudlin). When my mum knew her days on this earth were coming to an end (she was only 49 and had cancer, and I was only 24!) she said she wished she could "just have back" the days when we argued and gave each other the silent treatment (she was a master at the silent treatment as punishment). To this day, I can't bear if someone is sulking or not talking. I apologise even if I have nothing to apologise for, because my mums words have stayed with me ever since; it's such a waste of precious time, because the clock is constantly ticking whether we hear it or not.

Anything you would add to this piece; something that should be included and isn't?

  3. I would add that some friendships are not meant to last forever, and that's okay, so cherish the moments you have and don't waste opportunities to enjoy others' company. Also, because you will lose someone who raised you, you need to learn to appreciate them as people and not as a parent: forgive the mistakes they made, but stand up for your right to be treated as an adult, too. We're all adults in the end.

  5. Ah the first paragraph hit me hard. I was horribly let down by the one person I thought would protect me for ever but a year later, I still love that person and am so grateful to walk through life with them. The hurt and damage were devastating but there was something left alive under the wreckage.

  6. It must have been so hard for you and your mum to face her time coming to an end here, I can't imagine how to do that.

  7. Another great one, Vanessa. Each verse struck a chord within me.

I have learned that carrying a grudge is like drinking the poison expecting the other person to keel over. The only one your hurting is yourself. However, had I realized this in my teens instead of late thirties, it would have been much been better!

  8. Wow powerful yet simple words to live by!

I must admit the whole time I was reading it gave me goosebumps..

How sad with your Mum...but also how nice that she left you with legacy of remembering life is precious and is over all too soon in some cases.xx

  9. Wow, Vanessa ... very powerful. So sorry you had to lose your mom at so young an age, sweetie. If we can only look at each single day as the gift it truly is. Perhaps we should visually imagine opening a present each morning, tearing off the paper of our day and looking inside the box ... what will our gift of a day look like?

  10. Hi sweetie! When I came to your post today, I know I left a comment when it was first up, but it doesn't appear ... I wonder if I forgot to put in the letters to prevent spam or something? hmmm... I don't remember exactly what I said last week, but I do know that your post touched me very much. Such a touching story and a lesson hard learned. So sorry you had to lose your mom at such a young age, darling. Just want to reach out and hug you. xoxo

  11. Darling friends, I've been away from the blog for some time and it was SO heart-warming to come back today and read all your wonderful comments. If only I could reach out to each one of you and give you a heartfelt hug. However, I look forward to the day our paths will really cross and I can save that hug for that day.
